About My Work
"Hand Made Pottery by Lisa Bruna Cridland" is an independently run and owned Pottery business, based in Cranleigh, Surrey, UK. Each item is unique, exclusive and hand crafted from my Pottery Studio at home.
My work is exclusively created porcelain figures and ceramics which include beads, pendants, bracelets and bookmarks. Along with these I also make bowls and other vessels by using moulds and employing slab hand-building techniques. I use predominantly fine porcelain clay, which is fired to a much higher temperature, but also use a variety of other earthenware and stoneware clays and these are also fired using my electric kiln.

I prefer to make one-off pieces, but some designs work so well that I make others, although each is unique and no two pieces are exactly alike. Commissions are accepted if they are within the range of work I enjoy making.

I use only a white gloss glaze and a clear gloss glaze, both of which are high firing for my porcelain work. To these I add powdered staing in various colours which I hand mix and this makes each piece totally unique as everything is mixed in very small quantities, as I need it.

Ideas come to me all the time and my sketch book is always close to hand. I am very influenced by the natural world of animals and organic and flowing shapes. I like to add a level of humour to my work as can be seen in my animal figures.

My ceramics are inspired through spontaneous creativity and design combined with my own individual passion for creating interesting and "one off" designs. The timescales from design of the item through to completion of the finished piece varies, but each process includes:
  • Choosing and preparing the clay
  • Designing and creating the piece
  • Allowing the piece to air dry (up to 2 weeks)
  • Biscuit firing - which is the initial firing of the piece (up to 11 hours to fire, followed by a further 11 hours+ cooling period)
  • Selecting glazes and applying to the piece
  • Glaze firing - which is the second firing of the piece that vitrifies the glaze (up to 6 hours firing, followed by a further 11 hours+ cooling period)
  • Checking each piece to ensure consistent quality

Whether you are looking for that unique gift or a special ornament for yourself, you are sure to find something that suits your budget.

About Lisa Bruna Cridland

I was born in Hastings, East Sussex, but grew up in Italy until I was 7 years old. I then returned to the UK and continued my education in East Sussex and then went on to study Art at Hastings College of Art and Technology where my love of clay was born.  I studied under the guidance of Tony Bennett who still teaches ceramics at Hastings College whilst producing his own commissioned work mainly for sale in galleries in the USA. I then went on to study Model Making at Rochester College and learnt about Industrial Model Making and working in 3 dimensions using materials such as resin, fibre glass and metal.

I work from my studio at home in Cranleigh, Surrey, as my son has now begun school and this gives me the time I need to immerse myself in my sculpting! Although largely self taught, I have never forgotten my time at Art College and the love and affinity I found for creating sculptures and figures in clay.
